Ok I took this shot some time ago, I dont remeber which metering mode I used, exif data says Pattern. Im not sure which one it is, my question is, how do I get rid of the dark looking subject? This was about 2 hours before sunset, the sun was @ 2 o'clock ( North-North East).
20D w/ Manfrotto tripod, Sigma 50-500 HSM lens
thanks

it is always hard to shoot when 2 absolutely different lights patern, too bring horizon and dark subject, either find middle light to balance, use greay card, or use raw and then process 2 pics and make compositioin. if you focus or dark subject everything else will be overexposed, if light then subject will be too dark.... there are so many way to shoot situations like this. IMHO

I was hoping one of my metering modes would fix this, or at least attempt to moderately fix this. I was thinking, woulndt partial (also known as Spot) fix this? Because it meters on a small percentage of the focusing circle ?

how do I get rid of the dark looking subject? Use the clone tool in photoshop, you could get rid of both the jet ski and the rider.;)
Honestly, there is so much dynamic range there that properly exposing the rider will blow out most of the rest of the image. If you can settle for that, partial metering might get you close, shooting a grey card facing the same direction relative to the sun would get you closer. A polarizing filter would probably tone down the sky and reduce a lot of the glare.

Here's a quick shot I took with Photoshop....didn't spend much time though...
Merged two copies, light and dark, Layer>Reveal All and then just erase the spot you want lightened.
I'll take it down if you prefer it not be changed.

Curtis, thanks for the tip about resizing. Next time ill put up 800x600 :)
Alas, im not a big photoshop user...maybe if I pick up a "photographer's guide to PS", ill learn to use it.
Titus213,nop, no need to take it down. Thanks for taking the time to make it look better. Unfortunately the pic was not usable enough, thats why PS couldnt fix it properly. You did a good job, but the colors of the guy and his jet ski were too dark I guess.
thanks everyone
