I am considering the purchase of a light meter but is it worth it with the technology that exists within digital cameras?
Mostly outdoor photography and a relative novice.

For outdoor photography, you will be primarily doing reflective metering (at camera location). Only in cases where spot metering is necessary would I recommend a light meter need. And even then, it (spot metering need) only applies if your are utilizing non-pro (20D and below) bodies.

Only if you ever want to conduct an incident meter reading (at subject location), is an incident meter "required".

I do find utilization for my light meter, not as a light meter, but as a wireless trigger, so even though I am not directly utilizing the meter, it does have alternative advantages. I purchased the light meter for incident meter readings and have adapted it for additional utility.
