View Full Version : Why I carry my equipment everywhere

Sometimes it almost seems like too much of a hassle to lug my camera equipment around each day. Then a shot like this happens. I was on my way home at 9 p.m. July 20, 2005 and, when I passed by the Mohawk River in Schenectady, N.Y., I noticed that the moonlight was stretched across the water. Even better, I noticed that a few ever-elusive great blue herons were hanging out near the stream of light. I slammed on the brakes, grabbed my gear and shot for 45 minutes. I was chewed on by mosquitoes and I accidentally stepped in the river up to ankles, but it was worth for this shot.

Almost a perfect shot, but the sun reflection isn't wide enough. Plus it needs to be rotated a bit.

Hey Jeff, I'll have to agree with you, this shot was worth the effort. :D
BTW, Speaking of equipment, what did you use for this shot?

Thanks for the comments. Took this with a 20D and 70-200 F2.8 (non-IS) ... ISO 3200, F2.8, 1/80 handheld (I was quite pleased that I was able to keep it steady).

Wow...first off, great shot. Secondly, I'm amazed at the lack of noise shooting in 3200. I haven't really done much at that speed (on my hacked 300D) but I seem to get a lot of noise even at 800!
Again, great work.

Quality shot here.......... reminds me of the painting style of some japanese artists i know..

i suppose the noise showing up depends entirely on subject......... its a pretty dark image with HEAVY contrast ... so i guess a lot of that noise has been lost in the shadows
also by the time you downsize for either screen viewing or printing that noise just blurs into itself

The lack of noise at high ISO on the 20d has been a joy. It's one of my favorite things about the camera (although I love many things about it), and the ability to shoot with minimal noise at 1600 and 3200 alone has made it worth the upgrade from the DRebel. It's allowed me to get shots I wouldn't have even attempted before. Here's another example of a low-light, high-ISO, low-noise shot.
