After shooting my son, to get a pic for his student ID/yearbook for the first time with my 20D I have gained a whole new appreciation for what is involved. (mostly I shoot nature/landscapes/sports). Here's what we ended up with after taking some 50 shots or so :)

yeah..the top photo looks like you had to turn a 2 meter wrench of get that smile on his face. But he's in focus which matters. The second is the better of the two. Focus seems to be on the whole head.

Respect should always been shown. Good job, but you are right, it can be difficult. The more you learn, the less you know.

Good poses and focus but a bit dark for my tastes. I think a little levels would pop him out from the background. I find the bright light in #1 distracting but fixable. #1 is the best in my judgement. Good smile and despite other comments I think he looks relaxed.
I know what you mean about how difficult portraits are, so much to watch for.
Did you use the on-board flash? Looks like natural light.

Hey thanks guys for the input, yeah the sunlight in the first one sucks. I did not use flash that I remember, but may have. Thanks again. I'm not planning on getting into portrait photography any time soon but ya never know where you might end up.
