he i am looking at buying the 350D in the near future but i was wondering if i should get the kit lens with the body or not. this will be my first SLR but i am not all that new to photography. whether i get it or not i will get the 50mm f1.8 and i also plan to buy a 35-350mm f3.5 used (if i could find some:rolleyes: anybody kn ow where i should look besides ebay). so should i get the 18-55 and use it as my wide until i can aford another or just keep the extra 150 i would save?

what he said - get the kit.
for the price it's a great lens. even more so given the cost of anything else approaching those levels of wide. having said that the 18mm wide on a 350d with it's 1.6x sensor crop factor may not be as wide as what you're used to from your other photography. unfortunately that's a hindrance you will have to live with.

I´d save the 150, add a few bucks later on and go for something nice.

If you anticipate that you'll need a wide angle lens then I'd advise you to get the Kit Lens, as you'll find the 35mm end of your zoom won't be very wide at all on your 350D with its 1.6 crop sensor.
Some people like to slam the Kit Lens but it really isn't all that bad.
Happy snapping, David :)

The kit lens isn't that bad, but you can get better for not that much money. I'd go with the Sigma 18-50 instead.

The kit lens is perfect (especially for the money) for the wide angles- UNLESS you plan on taking wide angle pics the majority of the time. Then you should go for a nice wide angle L lens. Good luck.

I think it's a very good lens. Nice and wide and gives you a bit of a zoom, pretty sharp and for 150 bucks you cant beat it.

Kit's fine if you are restricted on budget. I tested mine a few times and it did Ok. The SIgma 18-50mm is very well thought of by some but costs £300 in Uk, dunno about Aussie prices. Great straight replacement. You could also go for something longer like the 24-70 2.8 Sigma if wide wasn't vital to you.
The key question is what do you want to shoot mainly? Answer that and we can maybe offer some more relevant advice. What's your overall lens budget too?

well in the way of budget once i buy the 35-350mm that will be about it for quite some time. i wont be using the wide the majority of the time though i would be nice to have one if the situation arises where i would like to use one.

Well... since the new 28-300 came out, there might be some people wanting to sell there 35-350.
Wishing you lot´s of luck!
