So a couple nights ago my brother asked that I print out a few photo's of his wedding so he could send them to friends. I fire up PS, import the RAW, fix the levels a bit, add +10 saturation, crop, sharpen, print out on the Canon i660. We sit around looking at the photo's and everyone agree's that the photo looks pretty damn fine.

But to me, something is missing. I print out a few more. First I let PS do the work by picking the canon paper profile, and toggling Black Point Compensation, or going between Perceptual or Relative Colormetric. The reviews from the people sitting in the room is similar to 1st print. Although now the feedback is more along the lines of "This one seems brighter/darker."

Something is missing. The picture on the screen looks great, and I've spent countless hours tweaking gamma and color matching.

Finally, after getting frustrated and throwing my hands in the air I let the printer do all the work and select Printer Color Management. I then select "Vivid" under the "F/X" options and print a test out.

All of a sudden everyone LOVES the photo. I must say, it looks like it more or less came back from the developers. The sky is more blue, the skin tones more vibrant, the ocean in the background seems more refreshing. When held beside the very first test print I can see that the original was some what flat, hazy throughout, not enough color. I'm stumped because the photo on the screen looked very good to begin with.

Am I missing something? Is there something I have overlooked? Am I going color blind?

Long Live "Vivid"

Sounds like you need to profile your monitor. What you are sending to the printer is not what you are seeing.
