View Full Version : Good Shutter Speed for the "Rice" Shot

Coming out of the church to be pelted with rice, seed, bubbles or whatever else has become much less common around here and I have only my first chance to capture this at tomorrow's wedding.

I'm wondering about the best shutter speed. Ideally, I want to pretty much freeze the couple who will probably be moving a little quickly, but it'd be great if I could still capture some sense of motion with the rice. I'm guessing 1/60? Is that fast enough to get me a clear shot of the couple?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Id think a little higher speed than that, the rice will be flyin' but the couple may be too animated to freeze them at 1/60.

Moving people don't get frozen before 1/125 to 1/200 safely if they're going along at a good pace. You will still get a few blurred shots but some sharp ones as well.

I have shot this type of exit at 1/200 and it was plenty to catch the motion of the rice. You could do 1/160 and get even more motion, but remember the couple will probably be walking pretty fast so you want to freeze them.

I think around 250 would probably work. You don't want the couple to be blurry. I would err on the side of having the couple nice and sharp and less rice motion for the majority.
Then for the last couple turn it down to 60 for a couple artsy lots of motion convert to black and white shots.

Sounds to me like an ideal photo op. Call out to the b&g to remain perfectly still (kiss perhaps) whilst all the guests are throwing rice and blowing bubbles...and walking around. If you drag the shutter to <1/60sec the effect could be quite striking.

Take some rice and experiment before then. Or with any moving object thrown up and coming down at the speed of gravity. That's if you have the time. Even moving subjects at 1/60 get blurred easily. I'd suggest 1/125-1/250.

Throw on a flash, slightly under expose ambient and it'll freeze everything for you.

Sounds like a good excuse to throw rice at a couple of your friends....

Wow, faster than I would've guessed. Glad I asked. Thanks for the insights everyone.
