Hi,

I just have been offered from a small studio to shoot photos of the artists that the studio has, whenever their new release is coming to market.

Now, I am new to this and have never created a CD cover before, especially with the photos I have taken. If anyone has any advice for me , please do share...thank you.

My best regards,
Artan.

P.S.

The help will be leaning towards, what software to use (nero), what paper for printing...etc.

I use the cd label maker program that came with my Canon inkjet. It's a bit of a pig to use, but it works ok.

Most CD duplicator companies will provide you with the specs for the images. I've dealt with two operations, one took hi res jpegs, uploaded to their site. The other had an elaborate specification that included CMYK colorspace, text and composites in seperate layers, font files, etc. Needless to say, the former was easier, but the results of the latter were far better.

CD covers that are original AND commercial are hard work to come up with. The sense of "Its all been done to death" is strong. Of course, some covers avoid the portrait thing altogether and go gimmicky abstract illustration, or even just news imagery. Its a living.

There are books on cover art work in your local library, or just visit a street stall selling old records and check out covers for 20 minutes.

1. What is it, simplied and refined, that wraps the image of the band? What cover is going to make the band happy? They usually have ideas... they're creative afterall...

2. Clashing clothing with background is always safe. Tuxedo formals at the landfill...

Rant: A lot of bands take the easy way and break a taboo or two or three for commercial success. This could probably be traced back to the mid sixties A & R rep for the Rolling Stones who publicised everything they did. This was before 68... it was a big deal then to take a leak in the street. A big deal. Such is the low road. Nowadays... mainly puke-a-delique.
