Hello,

I just moved temporarily from the U.S. to Japan and I'm looking for an insurance policy to cover my DSLR in case of accidental damage, stealing, etc. when I carry them outside of my apartment. I know in the U.S. many people use their home insurance but in Japan, home insurance policy's won't cover my equipment from accidental damage (they can cover stealing for an extra ~$110/yr which is rediculous). I've tried looking for insurance companies extensively on the internet without any luck and would like to ask if anyone has advice for me (company recommendations, etc.). Your help is appreciated!

Other information:

Equipment I want to insure --> 50D, 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, 70-200mm f2.8 IS
I photograph for leisure only (not business)
I will be in Japan for 15 months

I pay about US$550 per year for pro camera insurance, $110/yr is cheap. Remember expensive looking portable electronics are easy to steal, easy to drop and damage, etc, which is why premiums aren't trivial.

But I don't need pro camera insurance because I am not a professional. Plus, with the camera insurance I'm looking for I want coverage against damage. The only policy I can find now covers stealing only. I'm looking for a non-business insurance that covers damage and theft, which I currently cannot find.

The professional designation isn't that important, an enthusiast has the same risk as they use it just as much, take it as many places, etc.

Try an insurance broker.

do you have any recommendations of companies based on reputation?

Only companies in New Zealand, which won't help you.
