We will spend few days in Hong Kong (coming from mainland and flying back home in Thursday night) and staying somewhere in north of Nathan Road. Just asking some tips of interesting locations there near by. I'll certainly try to shoot some street photos of people as well later at night when the 20 month old is sleeping, some neon shots.

Also, is Hong Kong safe to walk around all the time with DSLR hanging in the neck? None of the big cities maybe are not, but some are more and some less, safe. My travel gear is not that expensive anymore (450D and 18-50mm) but would not like to lose it, nor the memory card LOL. Maybe it is good idea to leave the 16gig card to hotel and take another card with me, just in case. I am not that worried of crime, but hey, never know.

Looking to buy if price is right, Tokina 16-50mm F2.8 or 7D. Any good suggestions of places in downtown maybe?

I'll post some shots later from mainland china when get home.

HK is very safe to take your SLR gear out at night. You do not need to worry. Plenty of people have gear more expensive than yours;)

Nathan Road is quite a long road! It would take perhaps an hour to walk it. What's your hotel name?

Probably you will encounter more police patrolling than you would expect on Nathan Road. If you like to walk, just keep walking south along Nathan Road. Then catch a ferry at the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier to Central. If you enjoy shooting night scenery, I think Central is a good place to go. Don't worry too much about safety.

Have fun with your trip. Don't worry about carrying your camera gear - HK is very safe (but do take care of it). Post the photos when you're done.

Bought the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX AF 16-50mm f/2.8 from Wing Shing Photo Supplies Co ltd. at 55-57 Sai Yeung Chui St, Mongkok for 3980HKD. Not all shops carry the Tokina, asked few around. It's simply great compared to (well, what is not?) the 18-55mm!

Indeed, it felt very safe even on the smaller alleys, just common sense needed as always. Great spots for photos, will need to try next year to go there for few weeks just for photography and wondering around that great city!
