Fashion show - any tips?

Hi, I hope to cover a fashion show/catwalk event shortly. It is for charity and unpaid but I want to get the most out of it.

I have 2 questions;

1. What lighting tends to be best, should I bring a couple of speedlights plus modifiers or rely on the ambient light? I am worried that ambient light may not be good enough. Also I would like to have the opportunity to do some shots of the models away from the catwalk so I guess that bringing a couple of speedlights would be a good idea.

2. Do any of you have any tips about runway shots or poses/backgrounds etc if I shoot one of the models away from the catwalk.
