Sandwich Strobist Meet.
Date: 03-Sep-2010.
Time: 17:30.
Contact: SwitchBlade (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/member.php?u=139478).
Details: Strobist-style Meet 5:30pm tomorrow night at Sandwich Quay. MAP. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=392809&d=1252588946)
I have highlighted a few of the roads in yellow - these are one-way streets. It is a clockwise system.
Those coming from the Canterbury direction will come in from the left of the map along Ash Road and Strand Street. At the end of Strand Street is the Bell Hotel (in front) and 2 pubs either side (Crispin on the left and the Admiral Owen on the right). Veer left by the Crispin and you'll see 2 sets of traffic lights (Red circle with 12 on the map), you need the right-hand set which will take you to the car park on the Quay (the other way takes you over the bridge and out of Sandwich).
If you come from Dover direction you'll enter Sandwich on Dover Road, onto New Street and into the one-way system. Keep on New Street and just after the Guildhall you'll veer right onto Harnet Street. At the end, turn right onto Strand street (give way to cars from the left) and then follow the above directions.

Hi there and welcome back!

Yep, we get together very regularly (just look at the list in the first post), we're probably the most sociable group on the forum.... We know that not everyone can make it to every meet, but we like to set up a good variety so that everyone's interests are catered for to some extent.

what you posted yesterday looked pretty bloomin good to me!

I always tend to take too many of the same thing - and end up trying to choose between stuff with the most microscopic differences - I took a lot less shots than the last time I was there, I just need to learn how to only take the good ones and avoid the filler! :D

Checking in on this one.

Kev stunning boat with sails pic!

After 2 days sat in the sun I got home from Twickenham last night with a massive migraine, went to bed at 9pm and woke up at 7:30am. Knackered, feels like one side of my head has bee squashed.

So with that I think the low flying trip will be posponed until next week, weather depending.

I'll get you some rugby shots up this evening.

Big cats looking good so far.

Pete
24th of May 2010 (Mon), 04:48
Yeah, it was nice to be able to step back and just enjoy looking at the cats. I really wish that I had more of an eye for detail (like my lion paw shot) - I ended up with lots of photos of faces (most of them badly framed and oof). I took a little over 100 shots throughout the day, so a 10% success rate wasn't too bad, although I should really have put some effort into getting the fill flash right.

I had some hassles from peoples uncontrolled kids last time, but I was perhaps not standing in the best place. I was standing closer to the beginning of the runway at the barrier with my bag at my feet in front of me, only to have little tykes squeezing in front of me and climbing over my bag. Any attempt to crowd them out just earned me ****ty looks from ignorant parents.

Later on I moved further down the runway and found all the photogs set up in a much less crowded grassy area.

Bring earplugs! My hearing was slightly damaged at the show four years ago :(

Ahhh I knew there was a stipulation for some aspect of posting - I haven't sold or bought anything on here yet (despite threatening to sell some gear!)

didn't want to tred on any toes - but I forgot the twitter connection - another channel for further unecessary verbal waffle! :D

I booked a half day off work that day to make sure I get over there in time - so I may pitch up early and do a recce (or stalk your blog for ideas!) ;)

looks very well looked after fella, I have a Canon 3000v - I bought it a few years ago to try to learn about the technicalities of photography, but I don't use it very often at all!

but I think a film based shoot could be a good call - it always makes you think twice before tripping the shutter when you shoot film!

Here's two photos some of you may like..my dad prints film but mainly in black and white. An old friend of his passed away sadly and left a massive (something like 15,000 in negatives alone) collection of aircraft photos to another friend, that passes them onto my dad, who prints them (slowly making his way through them, been doing them for about 10 years now on and off). Most of the photos are from the 50's/60's and some 70's.

Both the guy that passed away and the guy that now has the collection were pilots for BEA, then BA.

MUG UPDATE

Got a letter from parcelforce regarding the customs charges but wasn't able to pay them over the weekend (their online system is down and that's all the weekend folks have access too).

I've just paid the balance now and they're due for release tomorrow, which I assume means I'll have them tomorrow night and can start sending them out this week.

At the moment the total cost is £28.55 but this doesn't include shipping within the UK so it will go up a bit if you want me to ship it to you (which I have no problems with).

There's a screenshot of my paypal transaction here (http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/paypal.jpg) and a scan of the parcelforce receipt here (http://www.kevinleitch.com/images/potn/parcelforce.jpg) just in case you'd like to check the math. I ordered 12 mugs in all :)

If anyone requested one but no longer wants it please let me know. I ordered one or two extras, but they've been spoken for already I believe.

FYI For you London dwellers;

This year is the United Nations' International Year of Biodiversity. We are running a joint competition with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to promote the wide variety of wildlife you can find in the Capital.

We would like to see your photographs of London's wildlife, and to hear about any projects you are involved with to help protect London's wildlife.

We are interested in all of the species living within a five minute walk from one of London's Tube stations, so anything that inspires you - mammals, birds, insects, flora - could be a winning entry.

No :p

Using film in 2010 is pointless, you're just pushing yourselves back down the food chain. This is the year 2010 - proper sci-fi years, the future we dreamt of when we were kids (we=people over 40). Now you want to start using a messy and retarded technology to do something that science has already vastly improved. This is a classic example of todays trend of retro self indulgance. Oddly though, proponents of this are rarely to be found leaving their cars at home and walking to work ;)

Is a 70-200mm enough reach? OR would it be wise to purchase the TC?

I have not been to Farnborough but have been to a few others and would recommend a TC, sometimes I wish my 100-400 is longer.

So I return home today to find a MASSIVE cardboard box outside my front door... I suspect it's the prize from the Lowepro competition, I'm correct! very exciting I open said box to find a Compu Daypack (a really great bag, ideal camera & laptop combo) just like the one I have upstairs that I don't use that the missus has been hassling me to shift!

anyone looking for a new bag?

Ooo how much?

Get one, get one..............lol

I have even been known to take the M4 on an Urbex trip or two, still produces some seriously good shots.............not bad for a 50 year old body and lens, all mechanical no metering of any sort...........gotta love the Sunny 16 Rule.

Just watching Dr Who confidential for the last episode on iPlayer. They just showed a colourist in the editing suite going through the scenes. Now I realised there'd be an amount of post processing involved with the video but I'm amazed watching a guy brightening sections, twiddling knobs that change brightness and contrast of each segment of video on the fly. Guess I should have realised that with videography the images would need the tweaking from SOOC that photographs do too but it's interesting seeing the difference from the SOOC shots to what you see on telly.

Love this. With a photo like this do you ask the guy to take a photo, or do you just take it? I've always been a bit iffy on getting photos like this just incase someone gets funny!

He was a street artist, just grabbed a shot........which aint that quick with a rangefinder........and left him a quid for his work..........thats the good thing about the Leica, people talk about them as they look old/retro and not so in ya face as a 1d with a hunk of white glass hanging on the front;)

Adrian, I hired the 100-400mm for FIA 2008 and it ain't too shabby :D I bought via a mag sub a Friday ticket that gave me a grandstand seat/vantage point. Granted I think I cropped just about everything but for sheer versatility the 100-400mm IMO cannot be beaten unless you have two bodies and can handhold a 600mm IS  As you can see it was very grey day and sadly did shower about 3 times so was not 100% happy but would love to go again.
