anyone know which type of paper the passport office prefer, understand they can be quite piccy about it, thx

It depends on what country will be accepting the photos for the passport.
Some countries have strict standards for passport photos. Try the U.S. State Department web site.

MiG - when I had to get my (now 15 month old) son his passport, I resized some pictures, then paid a few pence to have them printed on photographic paper at my local chemist - seemed the safer option, and I had no problems with them.

Not completely applicable sine it is US versus UK but related,
US allowed me to use inkjet off my s9000 printer using Ilford paper with no issue. It has been awhile so I can't remember if it was pearl or glossy. Since it is sealed it should last the full lifetime of the ink (or 3 times longer then the passport is good for).

From reading this, it looks like that you can use digital pictures provided they are of good quality. I will certainly send in a digital picture of me when I renew my passport in 2012. I just wonder what I'll be taking it with and printing it on!
