View Full Version : My First Fully Immersive HDR - The Log Cabin

This is my final (ha!) take on my previous tone-mapped panoramic HDR of the Valley Forge log cabin. This link:
http://web.me.com/kirkthibault/Site/log_cabin.html
will load a Flash pano viewer that will let you cruise around in the scene, zoom in and out, change the projection (right-click to get a menu of the various projections).
Shot RAW, converted in Raw Developer to 8bit TIFFs - 6 around, 1 up, 3 down - stitched in PTGui to HDR (4 exposures per position). Tonemapped in CS5, local adaptation, with some tweaks in 16 bit mode. 11620 × 5810 pixels.
Phew!

Here is a small equirectangular projection:

is this a 360deg view. Im assuming that the camera is sitting on a straight line between the door and the woman..

Canon 5D, 15mm 2.8 full frame fisheye on a Nodal Ninja spherical pano head. yes, the camera was essentially located in the center of the cabin - the projection is 360° hFOV (horizontal field of view) by 180° vFOV (vertical field of view).
Thanks for the comments! How is the pano viewer working out for you folks? I just started using krpano, so I would love to know how it is functioning and if my MobileMe site is serving the pano quickly, etc.

That was really cool. I would add a little contrast to the outside scene. It seems a bit faded...not sure. But that picture rocks.

The pano puts a high tech look on the very low tech cabin. Sharp.
How'd you get the lady to stay so still?

Outstanding job Kirk. I'm sure this took a lot of time to plan, shoot and put together.

I actually had no plan and just went for it. I shot another half-pano about 10 minutes before, so I had the pano head set up. Being Memorial Day weekend, there were a lot of park visitors crawling around this little reconstructed Revolutionary War encampment, so I didn;t want to be in the way. I guesstimated the exposure sequence and only took 4 exposures per pano segment so I was not in the way. The reason why it worked is that the re-enactor was a photonerd like me, so she was totally into the process - that made me feel more comfortable about monopolizing the space.
The re-enactor posed and stayed still for the 4 exposures in which she was the main subject. My longest exposure was 1 second, so she did a great job at not moving.
I am still exploring the HDR-pano workflow. I have an older desktop Mac Pro that is intel, 4 core, with 4GB RAM, but still does a lot of disk swapping when i stitch full sized 16bit TIFFs. PTGui has its own blend routine and permits the use of emblend and smartblend (via Wine on the Mac). Emblend is compiled as 64 bit, multi-proc aware. Smartblend does good ghost removal. blah blah blah...
Thanks for the comments folks.

The 360 panos is sweet, but if this is an HDR then why are parts of the Cabin still dark? Seems as if this could of easily been done with just shooting RAW and playing with levels and curves. But you did an excellent job on the bottom shots of the pano to get rid of the tripod.

Is there anything that krpano can't do? Here is the full-res equirectangular projection (~ 12k x 6k pixels) available to zoom in and cruise around:

Pretty cool.

Wow, great job Kirk. The pano is fantastic and I don't even like those things that much. The page loads and renders fine for me and fairly quickly too.

Not working here, must be outgoing bandwidth issues.

Stunning shot - the pano viewer works just fine. The details and exposures look good to me (check the whites in the woman's hat)
I see what Mike means - am surprised you didn't compensate for the exterior light through the open door.....regardless nicely done.

Ha! An oldie but a goodie. As some have pointed out, I should revisit this and use a proper exposure of the exterior scene and blend it into the above pano. Thanks folks, I don't know how this thread got resurrected, but it reminded me that I should go back and work on this image. In fact, with the weather becoming nicer and Memorial Day coming up in a few months, I should reshoot this scene, this time with the Promote Control. Speed and accuracy will make for a better final image.
There is definitely some artifacting in the shadows that needs to be addressed as well - I have modified the worfflow for an image like this to the point where I can address this too.
