Hi,

After using my Sony CyberShot DSC-S70 for 2+ years, I am thinking of upgrading to Canon 10D (digital SLR). Unfortunately, I know little about Lenses. I need an all purpose zoom lens that is good for family groups, landscapes as well as portraits, etc.

How about something like Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM OR the 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS EF USM Lens? or would you suggest something else.

Also what would be a good place in USA to buy Lenses over the Internet?

Thanks.

Ok, there are two choices here that would make sense to me:
5
1. Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 EF : this lens is a nice
walkabout lens, rather wide on the short end,
and not very slow at all. Takes great pictures
and is very light.
2. Canon 28-135mm F/4.5-5.6 EF IS : this lens has
the honor of being an image-stabilized lens, and
doubles as a basic macro lens to boot. It is heavier
than the 24-85, and has a bit more reach, but
on my D60 it suffers from underexposure and the
lens has lower contrast and is murkier than the
24-85.

I'd lean toward the 24-85mm unless you want to do macro work. Although the IS lens has the nod for sharper pictures in low light without a tripod, you could spend $85 and get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 for that purpose too...

Visit my link to see some samples of a few lenses. You can see the lenses that I have so I won't bother to list them. My most used lens is the 28-135 IS. Yes the camera does tend to underexpose with this lens but you can compansate for that so that's a moot point.

If you stop this lens down a little it's picture quality is terrific. All of the pictures taken in the "Ice Storm" gallery were taken with the 28-135 IS on a D30 in manual mode. It's range is fantastic. That combined with IS more then makes up for any short comings this lens may have.

Just a note about my lens comparison test. I just relized that I had the IS turned on while I was shooting from a tripod. That's a no noand can make the pictures very soft. I'll redo the test on Monday and correct the samples. I knew that something had to be wrong because my 28-135 IS has performed better than that test shows.

I returned a 28-70L and a 24-70L because the combination of this lens and my Sigma 24-70 EX came close enough to the L (quality of picture) for me and the two combined cost about $250 less than the 28-70L and about $600 less than the 24-70L.

One more thing. With the 28-135 IS you will want to get a flash for low light photography. I suggest the 550 EX. Yes it's more expensive but it works great.

As far as places to buy equipment from here are a few:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com
http://www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com/default.asp
http://www.deltainternational.com/
http://www.canogacameras.com
http://www.samys.com/home.php

I have bought from each one of these places without any problems. My favorite place is BPAV (BestPriceAudioVideo.com).

28-70mm is a great lens for group and portrait with the 1.6X magnification of 10D..
But you might have a hard time finding a right lens for landscape. You basically have to go into Fisheye range to get an angle of view that is same as a wide angle lens.

Well, Im much more of a prime lens guy but zooms are ok...
but I like using my 50mm 1.4 lense on my CANON ELAN..

I would love to get the 70-200mm 2.8 with IS...
out of my range right now...

Oh, I also wanted to say that I have the DSC S70 from Sony and have had it for about 2 years.
pretty good little point and shoot camera....was one of the best digital cameras when it came out and still delivers great pictures for that camera in its price range.
The Carl Zeiss lense makes a great difference I think
