I shot the F1 last year with my 55-250. You get panning opportunities on the exit of Club, and up to Abbey. You can shoot through the fencing at Club itself. Also on the exit of Stowe I got some shots - not that close in, but if the grandstands at the end of the hanger straight are full, they can make a nice backdrop. If you can get into the Luffield Terrace, you'll be able to get some from there too.

Suffice to say, if you'll have a 400 you'll be able to get a fair few good shots, just probably not a huge amount of variation, as there's big fences round a chunk of the track.

Leave the camera and big glass at home, and enjoy a few beers watching the racing. Honestly, you're now a very long way from the action at Silverstone, and the crowds will be huge. I wouldn't bother with any sort of serious photography.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY RENTING GLASS TO PHOTOGRAPH THIS EVENT FROM THE GENERAL ADMISSION AREA!

What Glass + Body (Full Frame, 1.3 or 1.6X Crop) have you already got? I will also be there trying to get some decent Photo's (I have an EOS1D Classic & EF300 f4L + 1.4X = 420mm f5.6,). The Fences in front of the Public Viewing Area are a Photographer's nightmare, it will be packed & the Track is a long way off so even though I will be taking my Gear I have a lot of agreement with Simon Harrison. If you have Gear that will do it at a push then give it a go, you could always do a crop at the edit stage. If you only have something like 135mm telephoto leave the Gear at home.

That's good enough! The 40D has an APS-C Sensor, which has about a 1.5 Crop, so your 300mm will be approximately equivalent to a Full Frame 450mm. 10 Megapixels will tolerate a fair post capture Crop unless you are wanting a massive Photo.

By Comparison, my EOS1D Classic is a 1.3X Crop so my 300 =390mm & with my 1.4X Extender it makes it equivalent to Full Frame 546mm. My Sensor is only 4.3Megapixels.

Have a great Day!

I've not seen the revised track, the original was desperate. The track was miles from any vantage point. I've tried shooting with a 400mm lens there with an Eos-3 and it was nowhere near big enough. We can only hope that the Damon Hill, Jackie Stewart and their rich mates have finally seen sense.

I rented a 500mm prime for last years Donnington event and it cost me only £100 for a total of four days. If I was going, thats what I'd do again.

even better, head on over to the Red Bull Motocross (on at the same time) and get even closer to the action!! Not a fence in sight!

I checked your link, they have timed the Motocross Races so they don't clash with the Moto GP action so it is possible to watch both. The Motocross will be the better photographic opertunity!

It's shame Rossi won't be Racing for a while after his Mugello crash. My Wife is a big Rossi fan so she is absolutely gutted:cry: She was bad enough when he came off at Donington last Year!

Yep Rossi put for about 5-6 months... I am italian, not a bigger fan of Rossi, i am more of a Ducati Fan, but it is a shame... He is the RIDER, he is the man on the motoGP ...

As an italian it would be great to see him dressed up in red ...

From a photography point of view i went to watch Silverstone and it is not that great, from a fun point of view it is great leave the camera at home and just enjoy the race and the environment... You will love it..

Certainly the attendance figures are going to drop. Valentino has been a major draw for many years, that why he gets paid the big money even when hes not winning.

My wife had been trying to decide which MotoGP's she wanted to see this year. Thats sorted that - None as of yesterday!

It should be, for this one I used 300mm on APS-C body while I was about 70-80 metres away, so 400mm should be enough. General admission areas are usually better for photographers because you can walk around and look for good spots without disturbing anyone. If you brought a 600mm f/4 L on tribune the other people would probably kill you.

Yes, shooting from a grandstand seat is doomed to failure and Canon "L" lenses being what they are, could give an innocent bystander a nasty bash very easily.

wjm, did you get any decent Photo's at Silverstone Moto GP?

Here is my best shot. I have resized it to fit POTN limits, otherwise it's straight as it came off the Camera.

I used my EOS1D Classic, EF300mm f4L & 1.4X Extender.
