Can someone explain the CANONMSC folder in the compact flash card when viewed on the computer, which contains folders 624.CTG, 625.CTG, 626.CTG etc. Are these files of any use or can they be safely deleted? Thanks in advance.

Which camera are you using?

You need to do a full format of that card.

Isn't .CTG a catalog file of other files present or that were previously present?

I believe so, Bob. Yeah, look at the directories, but they are probably empty. Seems I have seen them on one of my dSLRs after doing a firmware upgrade or something...

Jim, I think I saw that kind of stuff once a long time ago. However, the card should be formatted to get rid of that crap. It only takes up space and worries users.
When I say "format," I mean two things. On a new card, or on an old card with problems, I do a complete format in the computer. On a used card, routinely I do the quick format in the camera for each new daily session.

I follow that exact same routine too. Good advice.
Searched around on the net re: CTG files and didn't find any revelations.

Hi,
This is using the Digital Rebel. My Nikon Coolpix 995 also leaves a folder similar to the Rebel. As for the formatting, I always format within the camera, each time I do a shoot, the new folder and the CTG files will pop up... any insights?

I should mention that the files increment according to what current folder the camera is shooting, ie. 627.CTG, 628.CTG and so on... They are all within the CANONMSC folder when I view the card on my computer.
