Me again,
Still having seizing up trouble and my camera won't take a photo at all in portrait or sports modes - using a D30.
When I do manage to take a photo, the majority of the time I get a green and purple tinge to everything. It's pretty psychedelic but not exactly what I want when shooting.
Can anyone explain what seems to be possessing my camera?

seizing...my camera "sticks" - mirror locks up now and again. it's annoying. works in some modes but not in others. the person who sold it to me says it's probably a setting i've changed but i've been on the phone to canon and it's all set to the right settings.

If the mirror is locking "now and again" and isn't both repeatable and predictable it certainly isn't any setting you've made. There are, to my knowledge, only two circumstances where a setting you've made can cause the mirror to lock up.
One is if you've enabled Mirror Lock-Up, whereby the first press of the shutter button will raise the mirror and the second will take the shot and drop the mirror, returning the camera to your control. A variation I think is if you have it in timer mode, when it will deal with the second press itself after a couple of seconds, again returning the camera to your control.
The only other setting you could make is Sensor Cleaning mode - which will only work if you have the DC power supply connected (not a battery). That raises the mirror and opens the shutter for sensor cleaning and will only drop it back down when you turn the camera off. The function is then disabled unless you set it again - it is not repeatable without setting it.
That, combined with the strange colours, makes me more certain you've got a sick camera that's in need of attention by the Canon service depot.
Have you got any comeback with the seller?

yeah, i've been through the disabling business with canon over the phone. i've sent the seller your email - he's convinced it's something this "novice digital user" has set wrong. I hope and believe he is trustworthy and wouldn't sell me a sick camera. I hope not at least!
Thank you for your advice.
Any ideas about the psychedelic colours?

Got any samples you can post? It's a bit difficult to make any diagnosis without seeing them ;-)

unfortunately I don't have any i can sent...I haven't invested in a card reader yet. Only just bought the camera and lenses.

Do you have the USB cable for the camera?
If so, then the Breeze Downloader can use the camera itself as a card reader - it's a free download from www.breezesys.com.

thanks again for your help but I'm a mac user - nothing's easy is it?!?!
those downloads are for windows only.
The seller's been in contact and said he's making some enquiries as to what the problem could be. I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Lisa
