Well I'm getting ready to purchase my sigma 50-500, but in looking I see 2 different lenses for the 50-500. One is EX APO and one is EX DG. What is the difference in these two?...Also, I can't seem to visualize how this lens mounts on a tripod as my tripod has a quick release plate that's square and the mount on the lens is long and narrow...am I missing something here?...anyone got a pic of one mounted on a tripod?

Sorry is this has all been covered before but this is a rather large purchase for me and I don't want to get the wrong thing.

The DG is newer and I would buy that one unless you see a large difference in price between new and previous model. Quality will not be too different, if anything. The DG has different coatings on the lenses and a different external build ... a bit more streamlined.

The plate will work with the tripod mount assuming it is a decent quality one. A cheap and poorly fitting plastic plate and head will not be secure. I assume you have a RC2 plate, which is fine.

Hey Condy thanks for the quick reply...I'll get the DG, but I still can't visualize how a long narrow mount will fit on my square plate...I do have a great tripod and very sturdy..all metal plate and head. Does the lens mount slide into the plate somehow?

I have the new DG version and i think it still is APO but it is re-designed for digital aswell as 35mm.Have a look at this link http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/telezoom/50-500mm.htm it should give you a bit more info.

It screws onto the plate and then, as with current lenses, clicks into place on the head. You will have some overhang but no problem. Think of when you mount your camera body on a plate. There is lots of overhang side to side but it's still secure. Same with the Bigma. The tripod mount is also a useful carry handle. As long as it is mounts tight then it will be fine. All will be clear once it arrives.

There is some over hang but they still fit fine.

Great advice already, the DG version is APO as well. The new DG version has slightly better rubber on the rings, build is the same on both (and very good IMO) The DG version seems sharper to me right through the range and maybe has a little better contrast. All that said if the non-DG version is alot cheaper it's still a wonderful choice with many happy users. Is it just me or do all you other Bigma users only use the 300-500 range ?

If its on the camera at the time i use all of the range :). As long as the light is good i will leave it on the camera most of the time when at motocross, but have noticed that wide open seems a little soft sometimes but it might just be me as i never use a monopod when at events just incase i have to dodge a bike or two ;)

Mitcon, Well I try to stay as close to 500 as I can, but ive been known to go down to 200 if need be. As I dont have anyother lenses that are in that focal length.

I have to say though, it feels as if the closer I am to 500mm, the sharper it is.
