Looking into buying a Canon ST-E2 however everywhere I read it only mentions firing the 550EX.

Will the ST-E2 fire the 420EX if it is used alone?

Thanks

Indeed, the ST-E2 fires the 420EX properly; I possess both items and use them in tandem regularly.

The pertinent difference between the 420EX and 550EX is that the 550EX can transmit and receive the signals, whereas the 420EX can only receive them.

The 420EX works great with the ST-E2!

Thanks for the advice.

Now that I know the ST-E2 will work, are there any alternatives? What about a pocket wizard? Will the ST-E2 give the best bang for the buck?

Thanks again,
Troy

I'm afraid the only remote flash triggering device that I have used is the ST-E2, so I cannot comment on other hardware.

However, it may be worth mentioning that a 'bonus' advantage of using an ST-E2 is that it can greatly aid the camera's auto focussing system in low light conditions.
