View Full Version : maybe another dumb question?

From what I understand (after reading here for a while) the consumer zoom lenses have a soft focus at the 300mm end. But most of what I have read, says that 200MM is acceptable. Say on the Sigma 28-300 f3.5-6.3 Macro or Canon 100-300 f4.5-5.6 usm ( the cheaper zoom lens).

So, if I had a Rebel XT 350D (hope to purchase very soon), it will magnify any lens at a rate of 1.6x. Which means at the 200mm end it would actually be 320mm.

Now for the dumb question part….will that focus be soft as well since it is over 300mm? Or will it hold up and still be decent since the lens is only being pushed to the 200mm mark?

I have read much good about the Canon 70-200, but that is an extra $400US. I know a few will suggest waiting until I can afford that, and I may. But I want to explore this scatter-brain idea first. Thanks for your comments!

it will be fine if you're happy with the quality of the lens. Ignore the 1.6 in this issue. You will have more impact of the lens performance than worrying about softness at 300mm at that level.

What do you want to use the lens for?

The crop factor actually helps sharpness, color and contrast as the edges of the frame that would be lacking in some of these areas on some lenses is actually cropped away by the sensor size. Hope that makes sense.

Condyk,
I had a 70-300mm lens with my SLR camera (Elan), and I loved having that range.

I will be using the lens for the kids sporting events (soccer, field hockey and lacrosse). And I hope to get back into nature and wildlife photography. I have no real aspirations of being a pro, but it is something I enjoy. So while I would love to have a great sharp lens, the truth is they would just be for family and friends to view. Most of these photos will be 4x6 pictures and used for scrapbooking (my wife's hobby and I work out well) and photo albums.
If the quality is decent at 200 but really provides me with a 320mm reach, then I think I can be happy without spending the extra cash.

I do plan to buy a 50MM 1.8 lens to take some portrait type pictures of the kids that I can enlarge.

Out of the two lenses you suggested and the type photography I would prefer the EF100-300 for the faster USM. I've not shot with the Sigma 28-300, I think 300mm is a bit limiting for wildlife. The 50mm 1.8 at the price is a no-brainer :)
