I have never taken pictures outside of motocross, usually I go to the coke syrup inside and take pictures. Would someone please tell me what the best settings are for a canon xs for an outside race. Thank you.

For most purposes, Program AE will work just fine. No reason to get complicated. Framing and finding action are more important than settings.

The main exception would come when you're trying to catch a "panning shot" where a slow shutter speed is used to generate the illusion of movement.

1/60 of a second in the above example.

Experience is more important than "settings," because experience teaches you where to look and when to push the shutter button. Those are the most important factors: recognizing the best action is the key to getting good images.

These were taken with a 70-200 f4IS This was my first photoshoot of one of these events and it's pretty exciting. Great action. It won't be my last.
