Trying to plan my purchase for the year. I know Canon follows a typical trend with camera body releases, but I also know the last 2 years have been 'non typical'. I believe lenses are always different each year, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Any insight would be great! :)

Thanks in advance!

Tom,

Don't forget the new flash that might accompany the 1Ds IV. Or the video 3D rubbish being rumoured.

The releases are such closely guarded secrets that no one here has any idea.

I think you've got the Cameras right.

It's the right time for the 1Ds4 if it's still on a 3 year product cycle. It will be next to two years for the 60D which is 6 months more than the 1.5 yr product cycle for the X0D series. I'm wondering what canon is planning with the XX00D series camera. It's been almost 2 years with no update, yet the XX0D series seems to be updated every 1 to 1.5 years (T1i, T2i seem to indicate 1 yr cycle, where as previous rebels were 1.5).

As for the lenses, I'm not sure. The 35 1.4 is coming of age compared to it's L brethren that have progressed to Mk II status. The 45 TS-E and 90 TS-E have been included in the recent rebate periods. Those might be released with the updated independent tilt-shift mechanism. I think CanonRumors posted something about some niche lenses a while back. Could be confusing it with something I read over at NikonRumors though.

You know what would really be a surprise - a 35/1.2 L.
Actually, the 35/1.4 is already an excellent lens, but for the APS-C crowd, there are less-expensive alternatives. Would definately give Canon a small leg up on the competition, though a rather expensive leg. :)

Just speculating here.

A 35L II would be awesome! Hopefully it would push down the price of the original 35L as well.

doubtful. the debut prices for lenses are growing pretty quickly (thank you US dollar!), and the used market is staying pretty stable.

The II's will be a significant price increase, and the I's will stay up there.

As Canon introduce the 1Ds mark4 and looking further ahead the mark5 they are going to be forced to raise the resolution of their existing lens line up. The more mp's we see, the more the glass will be seen as holding back the resolution. According to articles I've read in AP, manufacturers know how to do this, although the new optics are likely to be (a lot) more expensive.

Presumably they will start with lenses that a) Nikon are already beating them with (24-70 f/2.8L is the obvious example here). Then b) the professionals old war horses, like the 70-200 mark2 already released. After that we might see a gradual updating of virtually all the EF range over a period of ten years, I don't see them bothering with the EF-S because the resolution is not pushed as hard.

Probably a coffee maker that looks like a macbook to fill up all our new coffee mugs before we take our 5dmkII key chain USB drives to the office.

Whatever is coming, you can count on it being announced near the end of August for non-professional models, and Feb-March for pro models - got to get the consumer stuff into the stores for the Christmas season.

That has been Canon's most consistent trait.

Have Fun,

Didn't quite make it - early release. Feeling the pressure from Nikon? :)

OK, as BP have jumped the gun, a new nomination: Stephano Domenicalli from his role at Ferrari after Ferrari are found guilty of giving team orders to Massa. Actually, thats probably too good for him.

seems every photokina canon is obligated to give us at least 2 point and shoots and a couple of printers
