Hi - I'm receiving my new D10 next week. Would I see any increased performance by using high speed CF memory cards (e.g. SanDisk "Ultra"), or should I save my money and just use the "regular" speed cards?

Thanks.

I personally use a pair of Lexar 12X cards, a Memorex I have no idea how fast card and an IBM 340MB microdrive. The only time the cards slow me down is just after I fired off all 8 or 9 shots in continuous mode and want to shoot more. My flash takes longer to recharge (550EX) then the transfer of the images in my normal studio shoots, so I suspect that faster cards are not as necessary at least not for me. I would say if you are shooting at the maximum contnuous burst mode frequently then it might make a difference. It may also make a difference in transfering the images to your computer or another device. The 12Xs seem to go slightly faster then the other two, but it could be my imagination.

Bill,

It has been reported that one reason why cards like the Ultra are faster is because they leave out some routines - like data integrity checks and space utilisation optimisation (i.e., make sure the memory gets evenly used) - and may give more image corruption problems as a consequence.

For some comparative performance figures check the CF Database here: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp. Obviously, 10D is not yet included.

Even though I should not name a brand..I will. The best value for the buck is the Ridata 512mb. They are within 10% of the fastest card you can get and they are within 10% of the lowest price you can pay. They are also not easy to find. I paid $138 for mine- and it is really fast in a D60.

I found a 1gb card (Viking) for $175 after rebates and coupons from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000083DY0/ref=nosim/qx5-20

use the following code:

MAPAMEXCARDS for $10.00 off $75.00 -- Expires 03/31/03
and they're still running their free shipping deal.

Enjoy if you're interested!

I just purchased a new Canon 10D. I used Kingston 128meg CF with my Canon G-2 and have also purchased Kingston HS 512 meg CF Card from Newegg, which I will use with my new 10D.

http://www.newegg.com is a safe / great site to buy from.

A good link to CF Card reviews:

I bought 3x 256MB Transcend 30x after reading the review on dpreview (linked above). Why smaller cards. I think its better to have the files spread on some disks instead of one large. A 256 will give about 30-35 RAW-files, and that is just about an ordinary roll of film, wich im used to.
