Personally I would stay away from Gateway but that's just me. I haven't been particularly impressed with their build quality in the past.

Having used all three of those brands myself, definitely a Dell. In fact, HP's after-sale support was so bad, I refuse to buy any type of HP product to this day.

I just picked up a Gateway NV7915U from Best Buy for $539.99 and it is great. I believe it is actually manufactured by Acer.
Edit - 17", 500gb, 4gb ram, I3

If you want to buy a decent brand notebook, go for Asus, Sony, HP, Toshiba
as for the CPU, choose an Intel i3 or i5. Stay away from the old Intel Txxxx or Athlons.
The other parts are usually pretty much the same in most models (4gb ram, 500gb HD)

I just helped my partner by a Sony i3 laptop, it works really well. Don't buy AMD or Core2 now. HP has been said to be poor by GTriever above, Dell and Sony are both good bets and you can get one for much the same prices as the ones you linked to above.

That was a guess, it looks like Sony and Dell will both cost you at least $100 more. $675 for the cheapest Sony i3 laptop at Newegg.
Maybe the HP is a good value option, but I wonder why it's so much cheaper than the better brands. If I got one i'd want to get it from a good store.
