I have noticed a fair amount of noise with the 1DS(or is it pixels?)
It not so noticeable using the 50iso setting but even at 100asa at 100% it can be quite intrusive. Funny thing is ! it doesn`t appear in all shots! I`m not knocking the 1Ds because it is the best but a little worrying.
BTW
Where is the Fantastic cheap Kodak 14Meg??

Hi Dave,
Could you elaborate a little more on the problem, please. I am interested in getting a 1Ds myself. If you need to send some samples images, please send it to my e-mail address. Thanks.

On sorting out an image to show you what I meant I have discovered that the problem looks like the type of sharpening that I`ve been using. It seems to show more on under exposed images and is more like grain than noise http://www.pbase.com/davechilvers/test
I have posted three images all crops from 100% enlargements. Don`t get me wrong, it isn`t a massive problem but for sure the images don`t have the silky smooth look at 100 % that the D60 images had but then it might be down to the amount of pixels on the chip size as against the 1.6 chip of the D60.(perhaps someone could explain that)
Out of interest after only a few images taken with my new 135 f2 ( not these examples) I find that the amount of unsharp mask needed is nothing like the amount needed with less sharp lenses and this has helped.
It would not stop me from buying the 1Ds again.
BTW I didn`t send these images to you on E mail because I wanted to share with the group but could send you a higher res image if required.

Dave,
I noticed that you used an ISO speed 400 for the shot, which of course accentuated the "graininess" of the image more so than let's say ISO 100. I know you mentioned in your earlier posting that the same "problem" persists even in ISO 50 although less noticeable. What program do you use to get the sharpening effect (unshrap mask)? I am just curious whether other people encounter the same "problem" but nobody else has posted anything to this regard. I agree with you that this might not be a "problem" (that's why the quatation marks) but simply the effect of "excessive" unsharpening feature. Did you apply the same amount of unsharpening masks to images taken with a D60 and you did not notice this graininess effect, correct?
Thank you for sharing this with us. May be I take this more seriously since I am about to succumb to the temptation of getting a 1Ds.......

Joshua

I did use the same amounts of unsharp with the D60 and as you enlarged to 100% and above the only thing that became apparent was the pixels.
I gather you noticed the grain kind of look? i don`t want to make too much of it because to be honest the quality is so good that it`s not a problem but it would be nice if other 1Ds users would post.

Did I mislead you, this is the full frame image before crop, shot raw and converted to J peg and nothing else done. The test example was a fairly small part of the original. http://www.pbase.com/image/14519155
