How did this photographer achieve this style of photography. More specifically, what I"m referring to the very sharp details, the light bursts, and the grain). Is it all from the lens, post/editing, or both? Is it certain camera settings (iso/aperture/shutter speed, etc). Here's the original link: http://stommm.livejournal.com/63021.html and here are some samples:

Edit: I looked at the EXIF data and he appears to be shooting with a Nikon D700, 50 mm lens at f/2.8. Shutter speeds generally b/w 1/50 and 1/125. Still doesn't explain his style. Any help?

I think he is pushing a lot the contrast .. But we have to start with a good picture to do a good picture , with or without post production ..

Just an FYI, per forum rules, you can't post photos that aren't yours. You can create a link to them, but not post the actual photos. There will be someone w/ more experience w/ this type of photo that will be able to answer. You might want to post this question in the "Performing Arts Talk About" section. You might get more answers.

You might want to ask Kalle (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/member.php?u=52582). He shoots / edits similar sometimes.

Have you tried asking the photographer who too the pic?

i sometimes do something very similar...it's contrast adjustments (w/ heavy clipping at times) along w/ desaturation.

A world class ballet shooter here does something similar to this. Calls it "crushing the blacks" to isolate the subject.
