View Full Version : Stacking "Step Up Rings". Should I do it?

So I'm looking for a cheap alternative (for now) to buying multiple circular polarizers. I plan on buying a B&W, but I don't have the funds to buy one for every lens. So, I thought maybe I could just get a decent set of step up rings for less than $25 and stick with one CPL for th time being. Does this sound like it'll be okay, and will it have any adverse effects on my photos?

well, you won't be able to use your hoods, so that can affect your photos. the other thing is if you stack the step-up rings, you may have vignetting. you could just buy the proper step-up ring for each lens. that way you don't have to stack them.

True enough, and that is another option I'm currently looking at. I hadn't even thought of my hoods :( I suppose I really don't need the CPL on EVERY lens, so getting those specific rings would be the best bet. Thanks!

I do what your asking, have one 82mm cpl and step down rings for smaller lenses (77mm), its ok but as mentioned you cant use a hood, but then using a hood with a cpl isnt easy anyway because its hard to rotate the cpl with a hood in the way, so i just use my hand to block off glare from the sun or a bit of black card and a rubber band :) generally you use the cpl with the sun at 90 degrees so its fairly easy and using it for no reflections usually doesnt involve shooting into the sun..
