Help me fix this image, PLEASE!!

I took this picture of my son with his very favorite person at school today.... the head of security/safety, Mr. Jackson. My son is moving on to the "big school" (middle school..... :cry: :eek:) next year and I wanted a picture of the two of them for my son to remember this special person and also, to gift Mr. Jackson a print of the photo himself......

But, there are several things wrong with the picture and since I took it in full auto mode on my little powershot A540, I'm not sure what can be done to salvage it.

Anyone want to take crack at it?

what SPECIFICALLY do you want fixed? the background, although cluttered, helps tell the story of where this is, a school. Do you want that blurred? it needs some contrast, but what specifically would you like to see done?
