Is it always necesary to shoot with a custome WB?

no, i never have. unless the lighting is static, and you can shoot a grey card under the stage lighting conditions, i wouldn't worry about it.

if you are dealing w/ deep reds, you can drop the temp rating down to 2200K or so.

I've never personally used a custom WB in any of my shooting. Stage lighting can get way too crazy and erratic from number to number to be able to use a custom WB. You'd have to be shooting a grey card every 2 min :lol:.

I usually shoot in RAW using AWB or tungsten and if there is an issue with WB, I correct in post.
