Excellent! What I find amazing about these shots is that you can actually see them in a viewfinder in the first place! I have tried with a camcorder for years and never succeeded! So tell us your secret - please?

do I have too :) ok
i use the lcd screen to see were they are Not view finder, and no skill is needed just take lots of shots i took about 65 to get 4 decent ones ,with these i followed them in the lcd and gessed that they were about in the middle of the frame so that the focus square must get them in focus.
im really looking at were they are in relation to were the front of the lens is .sometimes i dont even look at the lcd just the lens and the fly and click away when there in the midle.
you dont have time to compose Gess and take lots of shots.
hope this helps

Thanks Rob. I am sure it isn't as simple as you make out. Oh dear! I hope we haven't started something. P.O.T.N's Macro section stuffed full of hover flies! Just want some sunshine now to bring 'em out!

another point ,i found that you must move slowly around them and then although they are moving about they become mesmorised ( forgive spelling ) by the lens, it makes me think they can see there reflection and hover in one place to look at themselev's ,that give you time to auto focus and take the shot.

lovely shots.............. I've noticed too that they hover in front of your lens, havn't managed to get one in focus yet (no lcd preview on a DSLR so you have to use the viewfinder) maybe its the reflection of light they see, becasue their eyes don't have the resolution to see themselves in the lens...... they get a kinda sillouette/pixelated image, thats why they dont fly away when you move slow, they key on movement and contrast of light/dark like all flys) a fly doesn't see your hand coming to try and swat it ...... it feels the air pressure changing....

I agree that these guys aerobatics are amazing to watch
