As a new enthusiast with my S-30, I've wanted to throw backgrounds out of focus (control depth of field) by using a larger aperature (smaller setting). However my best efforts don't produce very dramatic effects. Someone told me that digital camera's generally don't have as strong of a control over depth of field compared to film camera's. . .I don't know, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions or advice on how to produce a more "blurred" background with my S-30.
Thanks!

Try zooming in as much as possible. This has an even greater effect than aperture.

If you go to http://www.dofmaster.com you can download a handy DOF calculator that works for the S30. You can even print out a calculator to carry around...

Hi there
I am too wondering about increaseing field/depth of view.
I got a Canon A40, and still trying to get information about Wide angle Lens for preparing Indoor 360 Degree Panormas.
Hope somebody throw light

I found this site very useful for the basics of controlling depth of field: http://www.shortcourses.com/using/sharphess/chapter2.htm#Controlling%20Depth%20of%20Field. I hope it helps!

Hi GCogger

You suggested to zoom right in. Just wanted to confirm that S30 only zooms to optical x3 but digital x10. Do you mean zoom in optically or digitally? I know digital zoom often results in grainy photos.

Sorry for the duh question. I am a newbee and try to get my head around photography. Thanks.

If you use an adapter and a macro lens you can really blur the background but then your stuck photographing small items.
