Some red mountains just south of Schofield Pass. The red is typical of the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area. Comments appreciated.

Very good shot, Mike. Did you go all the way to the snow blockage at the pass. Also, I assume you saw all the avalanche damage there. We were disappointed at not reaching Emerald Lake on this trip.

cgratti - thanks. Those colors range anywhere from pink-red (as shot here) to a dark purple all through that range. Last year on our trip to the same area we hiked to the top of a ridge (Frigid Air Pass trail in MBWA) and there is every imaginable shade of red in those mountains. Frigid Air Pass is just SE of Maroon Peak and it's an impressive view. That's partly why I like the Crested Butte area so much.
Stan - We could not make it all the way to the lake since we ended up leaving my Jeep at home and drove my wife's little toy SUV instead. When we were there I think a Jeep could have made the lake from either side. There was a big ditch from the runoff on the Gothic side just below the lake that stopped us, in fact it was just above the avalanche damage you spoke of. We did make it all the way up Slate Rd (man that's a scary road!), but there was one area of snow I didn't want to cross in our car, otherwise I'm pretty sure it would be fairly easy to make it to Schofield. The roads were in much worse shape this year than last, in Sept last year I actually saw a Honda Accord on the north side of Schofield.

Agree the roads around Crested Butte are worse this year. Two years ago, we drove all of them in my Honda Pilot (not as far as the Punchbowl). Even Ohio Pass was closed by snow when we were there the last week of June.

Great shots Mike! Wow! I particularly love the sparse trees. Typically it's full cover or above tree line.
