Can somebody here explain to me what Photoshop Elements is? I've seen it advertised, but not sure what it is. Thanks.

It's a lean version of PhotoShop without all the bells and whistles. Just enough for you to do editing of photos.

So is Photoshop Elements different than Photoshop LE or do they still sell Photoshop LE?

I'm not sure if one can buy PhotoShop LE. If I'm not mistaken, the LE version is bundled with a hardware product that you buy such as cameras, scanners, etc.
Photoshop Elements is a full blown product that you can buy from Adobe or a retailer.
Sorry but I can't tell you the real difference between PhotoShop LE and Elements. They both seem to be "watered" down versions of PhotoShop.

Photoshop LE is no longer sold, but is still being bundled with some cameras and scanners etc. It is a cut down version of the full Photoshop V5 (i.e. features removed but not added) and is described as "An introduction to Photoshop".
Elements a cut down Version 7, but also has added features. It is targeted at the home user/hobbyist.
Elements has features that LE doesn't have and vice versa. Obviously, Elements is generally more up-to-date, but LE has 16-bit image mode and the curves feature, which are very desirable.

Elements is still very good though and I understand that version 2.0 has some worthy improvements. I started out with PE 1.0 and moved up to PS 7.0 which is mind-blowing and comes with a massive price tag but some features that are simply amazing. PS 7.0 has awesome power and is especially worth considering if you intend to do lots of heavy editing and photo montage work. However, if you are only planning on tweaking colour, brightness and contrast etc. then PE should be fine. The price difference is also amazing!
Anyway, if you think that PS 7.0 or Elements for that matter, is for you then have a look on ebay. It's a lot cheaper. You will probably need to buy a decent book to help you work through it as well.
Have a look at the Adobe Forum too (great place to go) and that will give you some idea of the kind of things people get up to with it.
good luck
Martin
