Does the 430EX manual mode not work when also in slave mode? If I put the flash in manual mode, and then flip the slave switch on, it goes to ETTL and then the mode button has no effect. I assume manual isn't possible with slave on, but just want to be sure my flash isn't broken.

I think it does that because you would be controlling the ratio of flash from the master flash.

Ah, I should have mentioned that I'm using this with an ST-E2 transmitter and no other flash. I would like to set the flash manually (1/1, 1/2, etc) instead of using TTL.

As far as I know, the only way to run things in manual remotely is by using an 550 EX/580EX I/II as both master and slave, which works fine for me.

I've read that you have to cover the pins (or get a hot shoe adaptor) on the ST-E2 inorder to operate in manual.

Read this short thread.

You can use the slave flashes that does support manual settings in manual mode, but the master must also be able to support it. The ST-E2 does not, but the 580 EX II and the internal master in the 7D does.
The ST-E2 is also limited to controlling two slave groups, not three as you can do with the 580 EX II and the 7D.

The older master flashes, like the 550 EX and the 580 EX, are as far as I know equivalent (but not identical) in how they handle this.

The trick of taping the data pins on the flash doesn't work either. If you do, it seems the ST-E2 will fire one flash, but that will then not fire the slaved 430 EX.
You can force the 430 EX (I think, at least it works with the 580 EX II and 430 EX II) into manual slave mode, and then you can set any power you like. But you have to walk over to the slave each time you want to change anything. The ST-E2 will the control the flashing of the slave, but not the power. Try holding the mode button on the slave flash for a couple of seconds, to force it into manual slave mode.
