I’m a little disappointed with the auto focus performance of my new Canon Powershot G6, and wondering if Canon SpeedLite external flashes like 220EX or 420EX will help to focus, since they have AF assist beam light which is probably superior to the built-in AF assist lamp. I do understand that flash should be used primarily to illuminate the scene of the shot, but I read the reviews of Canon DSLR users raving about it and saying that speed of focus in dark places increases considerably, so I wonder if I can benefit from using one of those flashes in auto focus department, meaning if AF assist would override or work in conjunction with built-in AF assist. And if not, is there any external AF assist devices available for Powershot G6 camera.

Thanks in advance.

No it won't. They make lights that mount onto the tripod mount that might help. You could lock in focus and then shut the light off and take the picture.

You could try one of these:

Never used one or heard of them. I stumbled onto this one day while surfing.
