I though you might like to see this snap.

The original was stolen with my other images and all my camera gear in not-so-friendly Melbourne.

This image is scanned from the magazine article that I wrote and illustrated on an aspect of Animal Behavior.
Due to paper quality, the quality of the scan is not what it should be. My apologies for that.

The theme was that animals don't rush off madly whenever they see a lion. They could after all be running into an ambush of other lions. They watch the lioness but don't run away.
Even the two secretary birds didn't bother to move.
There were six photos with the article. This was the introductory one.

Kind regards

Thanks for the critique on my B&W school house. I have to admit that I changed the colors a lot on that photo and the original looked a lot like the one you had posted, but wasn't crazy about the stark white and black so changed it up a bit. I'll continue reading. Sorry your camera and great image were stolen. That's a shame, but at least you have this one ;) It looks fascinating....... A far off place. There aren't much critiques going on on this board so I so boldly went and posted on photsig...(yikes) I was amazed at the responses. It's amazing how every opinion is so drastically different, but that they "all" serve to help in some way or another. Thanks again. Great photo.

What's up ? Are you just back from a Safari ? When did this all happen ? Were you sitting in a jeep ?

Looks exciting to me. Great shot. I am gald that you posted the 1st shot. I would not have wanted to be around when this cat selected her target for the evening!

Hi Jenn
Thank you for writing. It's true that other sites like photoSig and photo.net are much larger and more active. I gave up some sites as a lot of the comments were rather silly and written by folks with no knowledge of photography. I might try again.
Thank you for your comments on this image. I still have the magazine article so do have the rest of the series, though of course the quality is not great.
As you were interested, here is a very small copy of another of the series. At this stage the lioness had decided that it was too hot a day for these games and she wasn't really hungry anyway.

PS. Just saw your post Howie. Thank you.
I used to be a sort of game ranger in Africa :)

Eland- You are probably right, usless maybe, but at least it's "Something" and not an "Ignored" by 150 viewers photo.....LOL Come on, if you take the time to look, why not comment, right? Like I said, it wasn't bad, you should try it out again, maybe I'll see ya ;) Anyway. You're so luck to have been that close. Do you live in africa?

You are right. A lot of people look and don't bother to comment. I'll try photoSig. Do I find your work under the same name as here ??
On your question, I was born in Africa. Now in Australia.

I love the second shot too.

Eland, does the giraffe have any means of defense ?

Thank you Howie,

Giraffes do get pulled down by lions but seldom by a single lion.
Usually a sick or old giraffe is vulnerable. And of course juveniles. This is when lions get killed, by the angry mother's kick.
The giraffe's size is in its favor, and it does have a lethal kick that has finished off many a lion.

This lioness was not hunting. Just being mischievous.
That was the point of this article. She was shoo-ing the giraffe away from the waterhole, all in slow motion as you see. The giraffe cantering just ahead of her, not galloping away in terror.
Moments after this photo was taken she lost interest completely and turned back ..... followed by the giraffe (!) which went back to the waterhole to drink.

I may post some others from this series.

Kindest regards
