Assuming you are referring to smaller birds you might find in the back yard, as opposed to larger ones like hawks and eagles. Small birds are very skittish, and the further away you can get, the better your chances of getting a good photo (read: long telephoto lens). Standing on my deck next to the house, I can have a tough time getting pictures of birds on the feeder 20 feet away. Just the action of shifting the camera to get the birds in frame is enough to scare them away. The sound of the USM focusing motor can scare them off as well, though the movement of your hands doing a manual focus might also scare them off.

Finding a nest can help you to get pictures. You can get a little closer as the mother bird will be more reluctant to leave the nest. However, you won't be getting pictures of the more colorful males this way.

Haven't had a lot of success, but I haven't tried a lot. Patience, small movements, and the longest telephoto you can find seem to be the best bet.
