I'm looking at buying this lense and i know it doesn't have sigmas HSM, but how fast does it focus? I have a 300D kit lense on my 20D, so does the sigma focus quicker than the kit?

I just can't quite justify the Canon version just yet, but i should have a few payments coming in to buy some Sigmas lenses.

TIA

I can't compare since I don't have the kit lens. It is not as fast as my 70-200 Sigma EX with HSM but not noticeably slower to where it is bothersome. Noisier yes. But you will love the constant 2.8 over what the kit lens gives you so don't hesitate. For the price of a single 24-70L you can have both the 24-70 and 70-200 Sigmas and be free of the kit lens. Why dont you consider the Tamron 28 - 75 (which received high recommendations in this forum)?

The Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is an excellent lens, very sharp with great colors. I don't own the Tamron, but I would say he's making the right choice in getting the Sigma.

I've owned the kit and the Tamron before and prefer the Sigma. The AF speed is certainly fast. To be honest, comparing to the kit lens is not valid as the Sigma is simply head and shoulders above in all respects (I am a kit lens fan when used correctly!) The only thing I like better on the Tamron is weight, but that is still a very fine lens too and no one will regret buying one. There is something about the Sigma that just works. You stick it on the camera and just know it will do a great job. The handling and balance is great. The 82mm filter size will be a killer for some, but it's the same as my 100-300mm f4 so I don't care ... they can share if they need to. The AF has a distinct buzz but I never notice. I might if I was in a church! So does the Tamron and the Kit lens. HSM is outstanding in every respect but I don't need it on the 24-70.

Thanks all for your help.My plan was to get the Sigma 24-70 and the 70-200 f2.8 in one hit.
