View Full Version : Flashes for the 10D

I've got a pretty basic question about flashes that can be used with the 10D. This'll be my first Canon digital, and I'm hoping to use my old EOS equipment until I decide what my priorities are accessory wise. I've got pretty basic glass and I'd like to spend my money on a new lens if I can avoid buying the flash for a few months.
I understand that the 550EX is the prefered flash, and that the the EX series flashes are compatible with the 10D in general. I still have a couple 430EZ's that I used to use with my EOS 630 bodies. Will they work with the 10D? Is it just a question of some functions being unavailable (TTL?), or are they completely incompatible?
Thanks,
Chris

I went through all this with my D60 and 540EZ flash. The 540 would work if the camera were set to manual and the whole thing worked pretty well that way. I just wanted to get something a bit more automatic so I sold the 540EZ and bought a 420EX which works rather well. You just have to watch what the camera is metering when you press the shutter button with the D60 and an EX series flash as you may not get what you expect. The EX flashes are controlled by the camera metering and not by onboard thyristors like the EZs. Supposedly the 10D is better in this regard but I'm not sure that's a firm proposition because the feedback is still coming in.
In other words, yes they will function, but only on manual.

Does someone use a Metz 54 MZ 3
with SCA 3102 Adapter?

Or a SIGMA 500 SUPER DG?

Which one is the better choice?

You have to use the EZ series flashes in Manual mode with any of the Canon DSLRs. DSLRs do not support TTL, just E-TTL.

Canon 550EX ~ Euro 399
Metz54+SCA ~ Euro 299 (supports E-TTL) - change SCA (price ~ Euro 40)--> usable for ALL cameras
Sigma 500 SuperDG ~ Euro 275 (supports E-TTL)
Hmmm. Which is best suited?
