28-135, 55-250? [Archive] - Canon Digital Photography Forums

First things first, I am on a tight budget. For both time and money :)

I just bought an XSi (finally putting down my A720IS...) and need a lens.

I mainly shoot automotive with a bit of motorsports, with the latter being my current priority. I'll be at the New England Forest Rally on July 16-17, and it'll be EPIC buzzkill if I have to shoot it with the P&S again :D (Also a track day the next weekend, and going to try to make some drift events, etc)

So, with that being said, lets talk lenses. I'm looking used in the $250ish range (I told you the budget was tight...) and I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Canon EF 28-135 IS USM and the Canon EF-S 55-250IS.

Which of these would you pick, and why? Anything else in that price range that would be good for what I'm after?

55-250IS - good value and useful range. Use kit lens if you need wider.

I have both and tehy are the only lenses I have. I am on the same budget :lol:

I'll leave others to comment on the 55-250 as i've never used it. I used to own a 28-135 and while it's a decent enough lens, i wouldn't recommend it for your intended use :)

I can come back later when I'm off work and post a few images from my 55-250mm. The images are just still automotive shots. Nothing special.

Well, just picked up a 55-250. LOTS to learn (totally new setup, including the XSi it's on, bit of a step up from my Powershot A720IS) but I'm excited to get going with it.
