its fine at 50 iso and 100 but go to 200 and it shows and is really bad at 400 ,anyone else found this ?
i would have thought Canon would have been on top of noise by now.

I thought noise at the upper ISOs was unavoidable, and that those settings were only to be used as a last resort?
I'm still loving the S2, having taken a neat shot (or so I think) of a dragonfly this afternoon - and not even in macro mode.
Can be seen at:

if anyone cares to look.

That's not new news. Every review of the S2 so far has noted the noise at ISO 200 & 400. That's just the tradeoff for having a P&S digicam with a 432mm equivelent zoom lens....
Its also the sensor size / lens combo. Have you ever seen any ISO 400 pics from the G5? Truly nasty.
Nice pic of the praying mantis, Nancy. I've been waiting to get a pic of one of those, but I never have my cam with me when I see one.

Rob,
try using it at ISO 50 exclusively.
That's normally the way to go for small sensor digicams.
Noise at 200 will be worse than 3200 on the MKII.
Best regards,
Andy

I just returned the Panasonic FZ30 for exactly the same reason. Even at ISO 80 it just had too much noticable noise to deal with. Even using a really good NR program although cleaning up the noise it created too much softness for my liking. I've been too spoiled by the clean shots from the 20D and I guess I'm cursed to lug it around everywhere I go.

Yes I get a lot of noise at high ISO and long zoom, but what do you expect from a small sensor cheapish P&S. In the right conditions the results are excellent.
