Buying Lenses at Amazon

I see where I can get the Canon 17-85 IS at Amazon for $569, less $30 if I use their credit card, no tax and free delivery. Total is $539. If I buy it at B&H, here in NYC, it is $599 plus tax = $650. The difference is $111. Is there a downside from getting an item like this at Amazon? One downside I can see, is using their credit card. I will probably not have an extended warranty. Any others?

Not every credit card offers extended warranties, buyer protection, car rental insurance, and other such perks or bonuses. Extended warranty is not mentioned at all in the promotional information about their card.

Is it from Amazon themselves or one of the traders using the Amazon marketplace? Plenty of those traders are scammers. Be careful!

B&H doesn't give you extended warranty, they sell you MACK warranty , that you can buy separately from any store. I bought my 17-85 from J&R and MACK Warranty from 17photo.com.
Knock on wood, I hope, I may never need to use it.
As long as you register within 30 days from the date of purchase, you should be good to go.
I've seen adorama store selling Canon gear on Amazon, they have their own site www.adorama.com (http://www.adorama.com), and store located here in NYC on 18ths street betwen 5th and 6th., so I would go for it $30 off, is good :-)
That's amazon giving you $30 not the seller, so it doesn't affect your warranty or quality of the goods.

The $30 off on the credit card is only for your first purchase, the card is from chase. if you mean the warranty extension from the credit card company, call them! Wait- I looked at my agreement and it seems that they do double the manufacturers warranty, but I can't guarantee I am reading correctly. The other thing to do with Amazon, if you are making large purchases, is to sign in and use their A9 to search, instead of google, it kicks in a discount after a week or two of heavy use, then you just need to use it a few times a week. It's 1/2 of pi discount, 1.57%, which sounds small, but adds up on large purchases, I saved $17 the other day. Also, you get points with the card, 3x what you spend on amazon purchases, and 2500 points gets a $25 amazon gift certificate.... I shop a lot at amazon, just make sure you know if each purchase is from them, or adorama.

I did that to buy my 70-200 F4L. I got the rebate $25 plus the $30 so I saved $55 dollars on the lens. Their creditcard is with firstusa.com I have a credit card with them and yes they offer extended user warranty for an aditional year. I transferred the balance to my capitalone card with a 4% APR and I only owe like $200 on it right now I bought it about 2 months ago...so life is good

Both Amazon and B&H have GREAT customer service. Would not hesitate to buy from either!

With most major credit cards you can extend your warranty up to an extra year when you use the card. So, all of the stuff I bought from B&H had a two year warranty, instead of the manufacturer's one. That is why I was wondering about the actual credit card you get from Amazon.
