The G1 may be a better infrared camera.

A quick and dirty tripod mounted (Hoya R72 filtered) shot of my backyard not only showed up better (brighter and sharper) on the LCD display of the G1 it produced a much cleaner more usable image…?

I guess the change to an RGB sensor improved the conventional color of the G2 but has “degraded” its infrared capabilities. (I guess I’ll keep it for infrared and backup use…)

More on this in the next few weeks…

This would appear to be an improvement in the G2's infrared filtering capability. I wonder if it is part of the CA reduction Canon achieved with the G2.

B+W sells a filter (B+W # 486) which is a combination UV and IR Cut filter. They market it for use in Digital cameras which may not have sufficient blocking of IR.

I bought one for my G1 and frankly I don't think it made enough difference over a UV-only filter. On the other hand, I didn't test under all possible conditions either.

It looks like you had to go from F4 to F2 and expose a bit longer to get an image of equivalent brightness. This is probably a "good thing" for visible light photography. Keep your G1 if you are really into Infrared.

Yes, I agree.

I bet a variation of that filter, perhaps only in the form of an extra coating or two on an element of the lens, is behind the reduction of IR (and CA).

I would also like to believe that UV is also filtered, but can't think of a way to test that.
