Smooth sand. Nice capture, but the sun is completely blown, and that is too bad, becasue there are probably a lot of colors in there that we are not seeing. I should probably visit that beach to check.

its a nice picture but as ryno4youth said the sun has been blown out a little too much. Also i find the horizon a little distracting at that angle. Maybe straightening it up could help?

I admit that I am very new to all of this. I just bought my first digital camera yesterday. How would I go about improving on this picture at the time its taken?

Thanks for any advice and critisizm.

Hold the camera straight, and use exposure compensation to underexpose the image which will decrease the amount of the sky which is blown.

This shot is crying out for an ND-Grad filter. Or a multiple exposure PS blend.

You can experiment by metering (setting exposure) in different areas of the picture. It looks like you metered right in the center so the darker water came out well exposed but the sky is blown. Try metering on the different parts of the sky, lighter and darker, to bring out the sky effects you want. Press the shutter halfway, then recompose the frame you want.
