Run by the Historic Sports Car Club, the Silverstone Classic is now in it's second year. This is simply the biggest historic motor-racing event in the country (in terms of cars) and was the best weekend's racing I've seen all year. Actually, it was the best weekend's racing I've seen for several years. A great mix of Formula 1, Sports Cars, Formula 5000s, Saloons and Group Cs.

A little more light to work with would have been nice, but you can't have everything.

The full collections are here (lots of pictures - I had a twitchy trigger finger)

Silverstone Classic - Saturday (http://gallery.ukmotorsportpics.com/c638154.html)
Silverstone Classic - Sunday (http://gallery.ukmotorsportpics.com/c638364.html)

Thanks for looking and questions / comments welcome. :)

Thanks Dave :)

Mostly the Sigma APO 500mm f/4.5 EX on the 1D Mark II from various points on the terrace in front of Luffield A grandstand. Some shots were taken with the 10D and 100-400L though. Paddock and pitlane stuff with the 17-40L and the 100-400L.

Really enjoyed looking at the pictures here and on your website Glenn. I just can't get bored looking at these classic racers. Some pretty horrific looking pictures of an accident at this event in MN this week. With the driver injured, I'm surprised they were published.

Cheers,

Simon.

i was there too and took a few pics with my 10d and canon 70-300 lens
it was my first time and to be honest i'm quite dissapointed with my shots.. i just cant seem to get the to come out clear and crisp.. i've attached a couple of pics, can you give me some tips as to what might be wrong?

i realise the pics are dark - thats not the problem, its just they dont seem sharp compared to other peoples pics.

i tried autofocus, and i tried manual focus.
the pics were 1/500 shutter speed ISO 200.

i recently tried some more with 1/1000 on a much sunnier day and they still had the same problem

any help is greatly appreciated! i'd like to blame the lens, but a bad workman always blames his tools!

Thanks Andy. Yes, the 312 T3 does claim to be an ex-Villeneuve car. Probably dates from 1978.

Hi Simon, thanks :) - I didn't see the accident, it was at another part of the circuit but I heard about it. Nasty business. I really admire the guys who drive these historics because the safety standards are so low compared to modern kit yet they are still prepared to take the risks and give the cars a run.

In between working on the cars I managed to find the time to pop out and grab a few shots, I have to say I'm not at all happy with any of them, and the blame lies squarely with the Sigma lenses I bought (they are just grainy and pale toned), so they are going back. My father is just about to go to Singapore and I've sent him off with a shopping list in the hope that the 100-400IS is cheaper there than here :)
