I've been following the anticipated arrival of the 10D for a few months. I had decided that it was the camera for me back in January, but I didn't decide to make the purchase until yesterday. I called a local camera shop to determine what the wait time would be and I was told they had one on hand that the buyer could not pay for. Needless to say, I was there within 30 minutes. I am now the proud owner of a 10D. I don't have any glass, flash, or accessories of any type. I'm anxious to run out and buy the first ones I find just to try my new camera out, but I'm going to try to stay level headed about this. I'm even going to ask around for a few opinions. That's the reason for this post. A question. For now, I am planning to use this camera to take action shots (e.g., soccer, fastpitch softball) and some portraiture shots. I am wondering if the concensus here is to purchase a few good fixed lenses or one or two zooms.

I'm sorry to have take so long to respond, but for some reason, I was denied permission to post. Over the weekend, I purchased a 50mm/1.8 (not macro). I like what I have seen so far, and it should give me an idea of what range I will want in a zoom. As far as budget is concerned, I could probably spend up to $800 for a really bright versatile zoom, but it would be my only lens for a long long time (other than the 50mm that is). Thanks in advance.

Get a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 AF. B&H is selling it for $699.
It's "equal" to approx 112-320mm on the 10D. It would be suitable for you portrait and sport photo needs.

Want to have some real fun? Take the plastic lens mount cover that came with the camera and drill a 1/4 inch hole in the center. Then take a piece of alluminum foil (flat) and tape it in position behind the hole. Now, pierce a hole with the smallest needle you can (beading needles are best) in the center of the foil. You now have a F256 10D pinhole camera.
Was out with a D100 Nikon pinhole- and it was a blast.

Based on your budget, I would recommend the 70-200 zoom. You might be able to get a used Canon 70-200 2.8 "L" series which is a terrific lens - fast and very sharp - within your price range. I bought mine used, spoke with the owner to discuss and have been very pleased.

So sorry guys! Buying a 10D for abou 2000.-U$ and than having 500 bucs for a lens is like you have a 5000.-$ Stereo Equipment with boxes for 150.- $. That does not make any sense. To get out the full quality of this camera you need to have the best lenses that money can buy. I heard all those blamings about the bad AF of the D60. I can lough about; my "L" lenses are doing an excellent job.
You know it´s better to have the best lenses.... and a cheap body???!

But 10D is already the cheapest Digital SLR body we can get...

I like the 28-135 IS Canon lens for about 400 dollars at B&H in NY. Great all around lens. If you have adequate light, this is a very sharp and versatile lens. I have made 16x20's that are incredible for this lens and a D60.

His 50mm/1.8 lens is probably about as good (optically) as your lenses....
