I am about to join the digital world. I currently have an EOS 1 and will get the 20d, but I am curious. Can you set the 20d to take black and white? Can I use my filters to the same effects? Thanks

Yes, and Yes. However, I think most will recommend that you take the pictures in full color and then convert them to B&W in post-processing. But to directly answer your question, the 20D does have a B&W function (including built-in filter effects, if desired).

It does make sense to begin with a color image and convert, but is there a way in PS7 to simulate the use of color filters (red, green, yellow, orange)? I admit not having used PS very long, but I don't recall any direct way of applying various filters as can be done within the 20D.

You can find the color filter add ons in Photoshop under Image> then Adjustments and Photo Filter

And to add as to HOW to actually do it in the camera...:)

Menu>Parameters (not shown in basic modes, I don't think)>parameters again>B/W>if you want, you can choose 'internal filters,' of Yellow, orange, red, or green.

EDIT, as I didn't even notice you weren't asking how to do it...
Long day, and I'm new here...:D

This doesn't seem to show up in PS7 that I've got. Are you possibly refering to the newer version of PS?

if u set the to raw +jpg - u'll get a color raw and also a B&W jpg. If you don'y like how it turns out, you got the raw to work with.

When shooting black and white on the 20D, the camera can actually simulat the effects of colour filters for you, so there are actually 4 different black and white modes. I have not ever used these so I don't know how effective they are, but from a few quick test shots they did at least look significantly different to each other on the LCD (red one had much better cloudy sky etc)

As to shooting in colour and then converting to black and white, this is the best method IF YOU USE THE CORRECT CONVERSION METHOD. Colour filters is not what you should be using, especially not if you are getting your black and white by simply decreasing the saturation of the image!

To convert to black and white you should be using the Channel Mixer to provide a practically infinite combination of colour mix black and white effect. For more on this method see here: http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/b-w_better.shtml

There is also a fre PS plugin available that will simulate B&W filters as well as the feel/tone of most B&W 35mm films. I think its www.free-plugins.com or something like it.

Man, ya'll are great! Thanks for the input.

Is the 20d getting replaced, or is this a rumor?

if you shoot in Raw you can have both color and black and white.
