Hi,

This is my 1st posting here and I dont really know if this forum covers 'captive animals' so apologies if this belongs elsewhere.

Although I've enjoyed digital camera's for a while now I only recently got hold of a 350D after selling my Fuji s602z so I still have masses to learn.

I have a Canon 2.8 100mm macro which I took this 1st shot with..

Flame Angelfish

Canon EOS 350D (http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/eos_350d) ,Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_100_28_macro_u)
1/100s f/3.5 at 100.0mm iso400 with Flash

This 2nd shot was taken with the kit lens (18-55mm)

Regal Tang

Canon EOS 350D (http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/eos_350d) ,Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_s_1855_35)
1/60s f/5.6 at 55.0mm iso400 with Flash

I also tidied them up a little using PS, for the most part removing particles in the water around the fish. I also applied some unsharp mask. PS is also new to me and it's likely I've gone overboard with something.

So there you have them...anything to say about them ? Im open to criticism by all means but you may have to explain in detail what you mean :)

Nice work fella ... I used to keep marines and wish I was in a position to take it up again. Have you tried increasing the depth of field? The forground (fish faces) are nice but the body starts to blur out a little too soon.

Great shots. I wish my slippery little subjects would pose nice

David, Peter....thanks for the replies.

I'm lucky as I work in a specialist reef aquaria outlet so have alot of potential subjects, these 2 fish are from our 700g display tank. They tend to pose well as the always associate me with feeding time ;)

Any tips on how best to increase the DOF ?...as I say I'm new and still learning :)

The only ways to increase the DoF are to decrease the aperture size (choose a higher F stop number) and/or use a wider angle lens or zoom out as far as practical. As well the further you are from the subject the greater the relative DoF will be. In the case of the fish head on focusing on the midway point of the body might help bring the entire body into focus where as focusing on the head you will have a greater chance of the tail being out of focus.
