Ok, maybe this is an odd thing to ask but I really like the look of images that have that vintage look to them.. I'm talking about outdoor shots, bright backgrounds, colors washed out a bit, not necessarily flare (I know how to get that).

Is it a matter of spot metering on your subject when they are backlit and maybe over exposing by a half stop? Or is there more to it?

I would do that in post-processing and continue to expose properly in the camera.

Consider using something like Nik, or one of their competitors, to help create a look --

I had a shoot planned for today.. got canceled on me and I really wanted to try to figure this out. I grabbed my wife and ran outside. I used spot metering, sun to her back, Exp. compensation dialed up to +2 for this shot. I opened it up in ACR and thought it was close.. I brought the exposure down .25 so EC was pretty close .. maybe I'll try it at 1.66. I had shot it in Auto WB, in ACR I changed it to cloudy to get the warmer look. No other editing was done on this and it's pretty close to what I wanted. I noticed putting the WB on Tungsten also gave me a nice look.
